Mark & Meaning is a project in which students experiment with creating original symbols. They reflect on two major milestones in their lives—one that happened in early childhood and one that was sometime more recent. They write about the memory using their five senses, and then sketch small drawings of objects from that memory. They then deconstruct these drawings into abstract forms that are layered and patterned together to create a mandala. These mandalas (created out of metal tooling, wood, marker, and gel pens) act as symbolic portals into the memories of the student.
